Randy
Queen returns with the first installment of the limited
Dreams of the Darkchylde series. I have to wonder, having
just read this book, whether it was first intended to be
the #0 issue. It's only 15 pages in length and, for
someone who has never read the comic, doesn't serve as
much of a teaser. Far be it from me to question the wisdom
of the creator, but I don't know if this was the best way
to herald your return to comics.
For the
Darkchylde fan, however, this book was long overdue and
goes some way toward quenching that ever present thirst
for more Queen. The storytelling is crisp and electric
with the customary dark undertones and foreboding
narrative. It gives a
glimpse at Ariel's past where she loses her best friend
Kiley to the stories antagonist; the forest. More than
memorable as it stands, but I can't help but wonder
whether it might have been better told in the 22 page
format.
Brandon
Peterson's pencils were beautiful as ever and complimented
nicely by Richard Bennet's inks and Jimmy Yu's colors. I
felt that Brandon lost some of the gleam towards the last
4 pages, but it didn't really distract from the overall
quality of the presentation.
