Happy Birthday Ms. Chylde.

This "down time" issue finds Ariel and her new found friends, War & Piece, celebrating her birthday in an old abandoned cabin. Gripping dialogue filled with equal parts humor and angst make for an incredibly enjoyable read. In this issue Piece reveals that Sage may be the spirit of Ariel's mother. All manner of intrigue is alluded to and your ultimately left with more questions than answers.

Why are "have to" and "want to" never quite in sync?

Its the day Ariel was supposed to graduate. She stands sadly at the school fence and watches the proceedings with pain in her heart. Meanwhile War and Piece stumble across Flatulence. The demonic bugger is trapped under a log in a forest and, as you can imagine, they aren't eager to help. Ariel finds herself at Jeremy Spencers Carnival of Fools and bumps into a little boy named Billy Cain. She falls asleep at the fair and, when she wakes, finds the very same Billy Cain butchered on the carousel. The bloody note attached to his body is addressed to her. Enter Pennance.

Lost something?

The story begins with Ariel standing helpless over the lifeless body of little Billy Cain. "Aren't you supposed to be dead, little girl?" Ariel turns to face her old nemesis, Pennance. A battle ensues but, with Ariel in her human form, its not much of a contest. Pennace goads her, challenges her, and eventually rips off her arm, in order to provoke her to change and, eventually, he gets his wish. The story cuts to the forrest where a hapless Flatulence is still trapped beneath a fallen log. War and Piece are long gone but a new demon arrives at the scene. Baby Boo! Flatulence tricks the stranger into helping him but finds himself foiled, yet again, by his own arrogance and stupidity. Feeling like an idiot, but free from his prison, Flatulence and the stranger join forces in persuit of an, as yet, unknown goal. The scene shifts to Salem where Perry is packing for college and finally, we are introduced to Ariel's sister, Jessica. Is she evil? I think so.

All's well that ends well.

The battle rages on. Ariel and Pennance duke it out in an almighty brawl across Jeremy Spencer's Carnival of Fools. We are introduced to Jeremy who, much to our surprise, is nothing more than a young boy. Or is he? He seems an old soul and could, quite possibly, be the possessor of a great power. His cool, calm, demeanor in the face of a monstrous duel would, at the very least, suggest that there is very little he hasn't seen. War and Piece arrive in the nick of time as Ariel begins to tire. War plunges into battle and Pennance, faced with overwhelming superiority, loses his taste for it. As he leaves he states, once more, that he played no part in little Billy Cain's death. Another mystery, for another time. Arial is now faced with a massive dilemma. Return to her true form and bleed to death, or keep the beast and lose herself to it. Piece pleads with her to choose the former and promises that no bad would come of it. Ariel gives in, returns to her true form, and finds herself undamaged, missing no limbs. But what of Billy's body? Jeremy checks the site of the murder and finds no sign of him. The story closes with Ariel joining Jeremy's motley band of travelling entertainers.
